SMU Rolls Through North Texas

SMU Press Release

The SMU women's swimming and diving team took 11 of 13 events to defeat the University of North Texas, 143-99, at the Pohl Recreation Center and PEB Natatorium on Friday evening. With the win, the Mustangs close the 2016-17 dual meet season with a 4-1 record, while the Mean Green fall to 1-4.

Three Mustangs doubled for SMU as senior Vicky Cunningham, junior Matea Samardzic and sophomore Brooke Pospichal picked up wins in their respective events.

Pospichal swept both springboards in diving action, posting a 1-meter score of 267.23, which is good for NCAA Zone qualification. On 3 meter, Pospichal posted a 277.58, just below the qualifying score. However, she is qualified to compete in all three events in March.

Cunningham registered victories in the 100- and 200-yard freestyles, touching just ahead of teammate Ursa Bezan in the 200 distance (1:51.28) and narrowly outpacing Adrienn Santa in the 100 (51.97). However, it was Santa (24.27) who took the top spot in the 50-yard freestyle for the Mustangs.

In distance freestyle events, SMU swept the podium in the 500-yard event, while picking up the win in the 1,000-yard distance. Senior Maddie Hoch led the group in the 500 touching in 5:02.67, and it was sophomore El Yellin who got the win in the 1,000 at 10:28.67. Bezan (5:04.94) and Yellin (5:09.18) finished in order in the 500 to round out the Mustang scoring.

Samardzic's wins continued her dominance in the backstroke and individual medley events, as the NCAA provisional qualifier in both events picked up the win in the 100 back by nearly three seconds (55.75) and the 200 IM at 2:04.53. Freshman Eva Gliozeryte also finished in the top three of the 100 back registering a time of 58.61, good for third.

Senior Marne Erasmus earned the final individual victory for SMU on the night, as her and freshman Erin Trahan took the top two spots in the 100-yard butterfly. Erasmus clocked in at 51.97, with Trahan close behind at 52.70.

The Mustangs' final win of the evening came in the 200-yard freestyle relay as Trahan, Hannah Rogers, Gliozeryte and Cunningham teamed up for the win in 1:35.86.
